Political speak

Not that this fits perfectly into this blog, but with the recent Federal Election it’s kinda floating around in my consciousness. A good friend of mine pointed me in the direction of an elegant website which helps to explain political slants and ideas a little better. The site also has the benefit of assisting you to understand yourself better. This really is the concept at the heart of good communication and language; if you can understand yourself well, you will be ideally placed to express yourself well. The website has a questionaire with a series of basic questions. At the end of the survey your political ideals will be plotted on a graph. You can then see what kind of political party you really should be voting for – ie the best representation of your political ideas and beliefs. I found it very illuminating. Here is the link: www.politicalcompass.org

Click on “take the test” on the top left to start the quiz. Many thanks to Tim for the link :-)

the daily haze

the steady drone of
wanton traffic
swimming past me
a stream of faces

your voice that echoes
grips me
carries me onward
forward still

i’ll yearn
for days like these
when
i am too weary to dream

but for now
i yield and
succumb
to the haze of sleep…

Well said

our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness” Vladimir Nabokov

Now that’s well said!

Well Said

I met Frank on the weekend, he told me how great Emirates Airlines are. There was poetry in his description of the journey: “the seats are so comfortable that when the lights go out and I get horizontal, I fall straight asleep”.

From this point on, I’m not going to my bedroom for some shut eye, I’m “going Horizontal!”

Now that’s well said…

Public Speaking – Toastmasters

I dropped into a Toastmasters speech night tonight and found it fascinating. For more info, click here: http://bit.ly/Public_Speaking

Cheers, Benjamin.

Well said…

Following in the theme of things well said:

I had a friend who instead of saying she’d enjoy a beer, would say “I could murder a pint of Coopers right now.” I love the vivid imagery which that throws up (pardon the pun).

Barry, who spent time at the Reepham Hotel, instead of saying he lost money gambling told me “The pokie machines decided they liked my wallet more than I did.” You must agree, that’s WELL SAID…

Cheers, Benjamin

stages of wisdom

young child
grips enthusiasm
with
both hands
grinning
i watch and learn
from
this youthful master

the eyes of middle age
wearing gratitude
glowing warmth
communicate poetry
without words
and i am left
speechless

old man
wandering the street
imparts more wisdom
than the wisest sage:
give up your anger
it will see you free

give up your anger
it will see you
free…

the hammer and the destroyer

the hammer of passion
falling
like a gavel
at an auction

the tumbling blow
striking harsh
a destroyer of fear
no doubt

bringing reprise
respite from darkness
and yielding
the excitement of hope

our best plans
ineffective
we shield ourselves
feckless

until the kiss of fate
rises sullen
to burden our hand
once again…

a distant star

she flitters
between indecision
from this moment
to the next
like frames
of
a cinematic masterpiece

and
that’s where
the magic is
the moments
in between

between the beats of
her heart
between inspiration
and expiration
in between dreams

i look to the west
and see
the warm glow of red
on the horizon
but i’m just gazing
at a distant star…
